Stay informed on the frac sand mining controversy
This website is managed by The Houston County Protectors, a group of citizens in Houston County, Minnesota who are concerned about industrial scale sand mining in our region. Because of the sudden proliferation of mining, local communities are caught off guard. We need answers to important questions and adequate safeguards put in place. We welcome your input and involvement toward the goal of preserving Houston County's unique beauty, natural resources, and rural way of life.
The Big Picture is Small… and Local
The Houston County Protectors attention is currently focused on the potential threat that industrial-scale sand mining poses to our area. We must not forget however, the "big picture." What kind of future do we want to create for ourselves and our children?
Conserving energy and producing energy in many different, non-extractive ways can undergird a lasting economy appropriate to Houston County. Looking toward the future instead of the past and building on what’s already been started by local people can provide more jobs for local people instead of relying on what outsiders are willing to offer.
